TRAVEL DESTINATIONS IN THE AZORES
FLIGHTS, ACCOMMODATION AND MOVEMENT IN THE AZORES
The lush nature of the Azores delights tourists.
Easily get there on a package trip
There are no direct scheduled flights from Finland to the Azores, but the easiest way to get there is to change in Lisbon. However, the most convenient way to get to the trip is through package tours of travel agencies. During the summer season, for example, Aurinkomatkat organizes package tours to the Azores.
Prices vary depending on the time of booking. A week in the Azores with its hotels usually costs between 500 and 1,000 euros. You can get much cheaper if you manage to find a sudden departure that suits your schedule. In this case, a week in the Azores may already get 300 euros.
Flights to the Azores are cheapest at 220 euros. The lowest exchange rates are offered by the Portuguese airline TAP Portugal.
Accommodation is affordable
The choice of accommodation in the Azores is reasonable. On the star scale, hotels are mainly in the middle stages, but there are also higher quality options.
Prices have not gotten out of hand either. While in more expensive hotels you can shell out hundreds of euros a night for a room, you can do it for 40 euros at best in the middle class. At its cheapest, accommodation can be obtained for up to a couple of dozen.
Island adventure by car and ferry
In the Azores you should rent a car. There is plenty to see, especially on the largest island of São Miguel, and a week’s tour may not be enough – especially if you want to relax at the same time.
There is also a ferry service between the islands. Some of the islands are quite close to each other and shorter trips can be folded in a reasonable amount of time. By plane, you can get to the islands a little further afield.
TRAVEL DESTINATIONS IN THE AZORES
São Miguel is the main island of the Azores, with its capital Ponta Delgada providing a good base for island tourism.
Based in Ponta Delgada
Located on the largest island of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada is the largest population center in the Azores. However, the city of less than 60,000 inhabitants is not an actual metropolis by international standards, but a sympathetic small town with all services close by.
Ponta Delgada is the most frequent place to stay among tourists. During the day it is worthwhile in the city to head to the beautiful harbor by the sea. There are several companies in the harbor that offer excursions for whale and dolphin watching.
In addition to the harbor, Ponta Delgada’s best offer includes beautiful parks and the university campus. There is plenty to do in the city itself for a few days.
Ponta Delgada is a good base for day trips. A rental car or bus will easily take you to nearby towns or beaches. The beautiful inland nature and wonderful hiking trails are also waiting for tourists.
Floral splendor and water elements in Terra Nostra
Terra Nostra Park is also located in São Miguel. It is one of the most famous attractions in the Azores and one of the most beautiful parks in Europe, without seeing it is not worth leaving the archipelago.
In addition to the vegetation, Terra Nostra has numerous small lakes and streams that enliven the landscape. The specialty of the park is a geothermal lake, the water of which comes from a hot spring.
Guests visiting Terra Nostra will be charged an entrance fee of just under € 10. A park tour is definitely worth every penny.
Hike to Pico Mountain
Mount Pico on Pico Island is the highest peak in the Azores. Rising to almost two and a half kilometers, the mountain is a dream destination for the enthusiast. However, it is a good idea to set aside time for climbing, and it is also worth considering the relatively high level of requirements of the route when choosing shoes. However, the view from the top of the mountain is worth every swan and a mile.
