History of Comer, Georgia
Comer, Georgia has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The area was first settled by the Cherokee Indians, who called it “Chowani” or “Place of Many Pines”. In 1818, the Treaty of Cherokee Agency was signed which ceded a large portion of land in what is now Comer to the United States. In 1819, Revolutionary War veteran David Comer and his family moved to the area and established a farm. The town was officially incorporated in 1885 and named after David Comer.
Throughout its history, Comer has been an agricultural community, with cotton being one of its main crops. During World War II, Camp Wheeler was located just outside of town and served as an Army training facility for over 100,000 soldiers.
