History of Albany, Oregon

Albany, Oregon is a city located in Linn County, Oregon and has a population of over 50,000 people. It is the 11th largest city in the state of Oregon. The city was founded in 1848 by two settlers from Illinois, William and Mary Monteith. They originally named it Monteith after their surname but changed it to Albany in 1889 when it was incorporated as a city.

The area around Albany was inhabited for thousands of years by Kalapuya Native Americans before the first settlers arrived. In 1851, the first post office was opened and Albany quickly became the center of commerce for the surrounding area. The town became an important transportation hub when the Willamette Valley Railroad arrived in 1870, connecting Albany to other towns in Oregon and beyond.

In 1873, Albany’s first school opened with just 40 students and one teacher. By 1889, Albany had grown to include stores, churches, banks and other businesses that supported its growing population. By this time Albany had become an important agricultural center with orchards producing apples and pears as well as many other crops such as wheat and oats being grown throughout the valley.
